WHAT EXACTLY MAKES CONCRETE? Despite the fact that concrete or concrete products create a hardened surface, concrete is very porous and requires care to preserve, protect and maintain the appearance of these surfaces.
Definition: Concrete is a powder mixed with aggregate (like sand or gravel) and water to create a hard surface when fully dried and cured. (Curing time for concrete is usually 28 days.)
Concrete Description: Concrete is a mixture of Portland cement powder, water, fine and coarse particles, and a small amount of air. Concrete is the most widely used construction building material in the world.
When concrete is mixed, it is delivered to the job site in a soft and pliable state. This unique quality that makes concrete desirable as a construction building material is that is can be molded to virtually any form or shape. After the curing time it hardens and provides a wide choice of textures and colors.
Concrete Composition: The two major components of concrete powder are dicalcium and tricalcium silicates, aggregate and water. The aggregate materials are usually composed of fine particles like sand, and coarse particles such as gravel, crushed stone or slag. When cement is mixed with water, the compounds of the cement react and harden in approximately 28 days. As the cement hardens, it binds the particles into a solid mass. After exposed surfaces of concrete have hardened sufficiently to resist marring, they should be sprinkled or covered with water or kept moist by using moisture-retaining materials. The longer concrete surfaces stay moist, the stronger it becomes. Under most normal conditions, concrete grows harder as it grows older just like our skin.
